Frequently Asked Questions
Do you conduct online workshops?
We don't conduct live online workshops at the moment. We prefer in-person experiences as soapmaking is a tricky medium that requires a thorough understanding of the science of saponification.
We are in the process of creating a self-paced beginners soapmaking course online where you will be able to understand the art and science behind soapmaking at your own pace.
Where do your workshops take place?
Most of our workshops take place in Pune at our Studio. We occasionally run workshops in other parts of Pune.
We rarely run workshops in other cities due to the logistics and expenses involved. If you are interested in collaborating with us, organising an event and helping us find participants in your city, email us at hello@sat-suma.com and im sure we can find a way to work together.
Who are these workshops suitable for?
Our workshops are designed for hobbyists and beginners with little to no prior experience in soapmaking. We guide you through the process step-by-step and focus on fun, hands-on learning.
What will I learn during the workshop?
You'll learn the basics of cold process soapmaking, including a brief history and theory of soapmaking. We don't teach formulation of recipes.
We will work on creating One soap design only based on the theme of the workshop during this 2 day period. The focus will be on creating a loaf of soap using different techniques such as layering, swirling, and embedding. You will cut your own loaf of soap which you can then take home.
What will we make during the workshop?
We conduct themed workshops, where the focus is on creating your own unique loaf of soap with our guidance. Each participant gets to make one loaf of soap in one design based on the theme of the workshop.
Will I be making soap from scratch?
We might allow participants to make Lye for super specialised advanced workshops
For our Artisanal workshops, all participants are given a container each of Lye Solution and pre-measured oils. You will be splitting the batch, mixing the colours, measuring out your fragrance, pouring out the soap into the loaf on your own under our guidance.
Due to time constraints, you will not be making a Lye Solution from scratch or measuring the oils out for the recipe.
Do I need any prior experience or knowledge?
No prior experience is necessary. Our workshops are beginner-friendly, and we explain everything from the fundamentals of soapmaking to the more creative techniques.
Will I be able to take my soap home after the workshop?
Yes, you’ll take home the soap loaf you create. You need to carry a container to be able to take back your soaps on day two.
Please note that cold process soap needs time to cure, so you’ll need to let it sit for 4–6 weeks before using it.
What materials and tools will be provided?
All materials and equipment will be provided, including oils, lye, fragrances, colours, moulds, and safety gear.
You just need to bring your enthusiasm!
How long do the workshops last?
The Artisanal Soapmaking workshop runs over 2 days. Day 1 is the longer day where we cover all aspects of soapmaking and it runs for about 5-6 hours. As soap needs time to harden up, the participants are required to come in on Day 2 to unmould and cut their soap. We also conduct a Q&A on day 2.
I want to start a soapmaking business, how will this workshop help me?
Our workshops are designed for hobbyists or people who enjoy working with their hands and experiencing new things. Having said that we have had a few participants who have started their own businesses using the basic learnings they have gotten from us.
In this beginners soapmaking workshop, we will teach you the basics of cold process soapmaking, including a brief history and theory of soapmaking. We don't teach formulation of recipes, this is something you will have to learn on your own. We don't teach anything to do with running a soap business either. Our main focus on this workshop is the different soap pouring techniques which are fun to do and of course can help you in your soapmaking projects in the future.
We believe that in soapmaking, you will keep learning as you go along, the learning never ends. It's really up to the maker to decide where they would like to take their own journey.
